This blog is designed to explore the new Fairy Tale Tarot by Lisa Hunt. But since I LOVE to blog....I am sure I'll wander off into some other musings about fairytales!!

"The Fairy Tale Tarot cards are like gazing into that pool. They reflect different aspects of each of us. They illuminate or accentuate those parts of us that we seek, or deny, or just long to understand. The cards and the fairy tales they are based on, provide a framework for understanding self and the human aspects of life. And maybe the "not so human" aspects too....the spiritual. They are the water in the pool. Clear and shimmering, reflecting clearly and yet also bringing forth tiny glimpses of those wings. It is this aspect of the cards that called to me. I feel they have things to reveal to me and I am anxious to hear them "speak."

Favorite Arcana Cards

Currently I am exploring only the Major Arcana, until I get more familar with the cards, images, and fairy tales. So my "activity" for this evening was to pick favorites. Of course, it was impossible to pick just one...so....my faves are Innocence (Little Red) and The Fairy Godmother.

I've already spoken some of the 0 Card...Innocence and I'll get more into the Fairy Godmother card later....but I asked myself...what is it about these two that spoke to me, that teased and delighted me visually and imaginatively?

The 0 Card is an enchanted forest scence with Little Red and the Wolf, paused along the path. The gnarled trees remind me of ancient wisdom and speak of a forest that is old. A forest that has withstood the forces of nature and time...has endured so to speak. To me this represents the human experience....it does not cease but continues on...through great great grandmothers' times, through my time and through the time of my great great grandchildren. Along that path there will always be Innocence and Evil (I'm not crazy about the word evil...but for lack of a better word I'll use it).

The III Card is the Fairy Godmother. Who can resist the Fairy Godmother...and yet when I look at the image it strikes me...this is not your typical....oh she's so beautiful fairy godmother...no indeed...this is an older woman, with beauty in the lines of her face and strength in the way she holds herself. This is a woman who has "lived". This is a woman who "knows." Not just the wisdom that time and experience brings...but the wisdom of being able to see into hearts, to look into eyes and catch that little glimpse of the soul that lets one "know" exactly the truth. She is a woman of kindness and compassion. Of strength and gentleness. Having endured sorrow, she knows the real treasure of joy.

The two together...my favorite cards...when I think about it...they represent both ends of the feminine experience (not that they can't speak to men also but I'm looking at it from a female perspective). Little Red is the girl child, with innocence and trust, facing the world with open heart and open arms. She travels the path and knows no danger. While the Fairy Godmother is the other end, a woman of age, with a life well lived, whose paths have lead her through the dangers of life, whose journey has captured a wisdom that only life can give one. She is confident in herself, has ceased to let others value or devalue her...she simply is...The Fairy Godmother.

So those are my thoughts, such as they are. A word of caution...thoughts change, they evolve, they are fluid. So do not be too shocked if I find a few faves...I'm fickle like that. Nay not really fickle but as life ebbs and flows...our perspectives change...we find different things that suddenly mean something more to us then they did before...so this is an evolving process subject to being revisited at my whim...LOL!!

  1. Something I always do with a new deck is pick my favorites... and look at the most negative aspects to give it a whole meaning, and might show me something I need to work on. Then I find my LEAST favorites... and look at the most positive, best meaning. Many times doing that has made me appreciate the cards I didn't initially like, and also shows me something to work on.

  2. Also meant to say I like the interpretation of the two cards together... both ends of the spectrum.
